hello everyone my name is James start of last weekend me and older brother went down to one of our fishing spots in the rocko area. casting gardies and pills and trying different retrieve techniques after a good 30 minutes finally Willy managed to land a nice tailor in the 45cm mark the school managed to hang around and to my surprise on my second turn of the handle i got smashed as soon as the hooks set i
shouted down the beach im on and its not a greeny i managed to pull a nice salmon just hitting 50cm
then another 2 tailor were pulled from that part of the beach as we slowly made our way down the beach we found another school much bigger than the last one both of us belted out our baits and within seconds willy was on to a thumper then i managed to hook one seconds later both were landed and instantly lines were re-rigged and again double hook up this time i lost a nice tailor around 55-60cm as our fishing trip ended we landed a total of 9 tailor 3 were let go to fight another day
bycatch 50cm salmon
2 tarwine
only just figured out how to post pics will put pics up tonight

Having never targeted mulloway before, recently with the help of a few fellas on here I've been trying hard to get into my first mulloway. Namely, Grot who is a mulla master had a few spots and we tried to get into them at s-bend but without much success on our first trip besides a few lost hook ups i was keen as ever to try again.

Over the weekend and this week Mannablue had some time off work, so we planned in to hit s-bend again. Grot and Fish couldn't join us this trip due to being Fathers (what's a good fathers day without fishing? haha).

We headed to a spot Grot had shared before, but not being local we managed to get a little lost and confused. However the place looked alright with a nice hole close to shore.
The first day we didn't have much hope and manna lost a nice chopper inshore the night was looking pretty dead, and me losing about 4 rigs already to the harsh s-bend reefs. We had a few good bites without hook ups and brought in a few annoying wobbys.
After having enough, i decided to fish a hole literally 5m from shore that held no reef. 2 mins later a nice bite and a hook up to my first mulla which went 70cm, smaller than i hoped but I was stoked!
Attachment 10793
A few hours later another one from the same hole which was a bit smaller at around the 60cm mark (released).
Attachment 10791 (look like a goof in the photo haha)

The next day we saw heaps of schools of tailor, that looked of a decent size but didn't manage to get one. Later that evening towards sunset after fishing hard for a few hours while manna slept, i managed to get a 49cm tailor!
Attachment 10792
Manna awoke and nailed one shortly after. As it got dark, i fished this same hole only a short cast and early in the night a decent bite and I was onto something better. The headshakes on this thing were crazy and it was amplified with using braid and a heavy rod. Sure enough it was a much better mulloway that went 90cm! Now i was truly stoked!
Attachment 10790

A bit later I had a few bites that felt wrassy, then some bigger solid ones. I hooked into it and it was a heavy fish. It went ballistic and took off and on 50lb braid with my drag a bit too harshly set it busted off after about a 20m run. No idea what it was, but it had headshakes and was something very heavy! I would have loved to had seen what it was. I called it an early night and manna fished on and managed a similar run which reefed him after about 100m run along with about 20 wobbys.

Thanks to the fellas on here that were able to point me in the right direction. I can now tick mulloway off the list, and I highly doubt it will be the last. As they are a fish certainly worth the effort for the fight and the feed! It feels good to have a freezer stocked up for once. :)

Spent the night up Two Rocks / Wilbinga way, determined to bag some of these big winter tailor I keep reading about. Over the past few months we've had a number of forays into the area, but only day trips. Usually arriving too late for a good dawn session, or leaving too early needing to be home in the evenings for one reason or another.

An overnighter was the only solution ...

Found ourselves a likely spot. Like much of that coast, a good hole and a bit of reef.

Saturday arvo - some nice big herring about. Tide was going out, and just as the sun set, the tailor came out to play. I scored a PB at 47cm, followed by another just over 40cm. My mate just had to out do me with a 48cm and a second, too, around 40. It all went quiet about 8ish, with just a few herring about.

Got up an hour before sunrise to have a second go. Tide was coming in and near peak. Big herring again, but no sign of any tailor. Lots of tarwhine about, and kept a nice one at 28cm for the pan.

Bonus was I finally got to blood the new kit I'd bought specifically for the task.

And the tackle? Good old-fashioned baitcast mulies on an gang (3 x 4/0, plus a 3/0 in the tail).

So, I guess at under 50cm they're still technically "choppers", but the biggest I've caught ... so far. :D
