I have three complete sphincter blowout moments.
All from the late seventies and around the Ord river area.
The first was having to walk it from a vehicle with a broken diff, I chose to walk at night as it was a full moon.
I was walking along a track in a huge orange plain with shiny flat stones gleaming , like an italian courtyard kinda.
It was glorious until I realised that walking just off the track was a pack of dingo's, 9 of them, and 3 metrs away and keeping pace. All eyes were on me, and the creepiest thing was even tho I could see their footfalls there was absolutely no sound.
They did that for a few kilometres, I had a water bottle and I immediately picked up stones. The stress of thinking "If I stumble these things will be all over me and it will be a nasty way to go" finally got to me and I threw boundies at them like a machine gun.
They took off, but followed me for a good 10 klicks before peeling away.
I was young so I refused to mention it when I reached the station house but everyone could see I was pretty rattled.
If you spend enough time in the bush you do see some strange things, my farther and I will swear to this day that we saw and heard a Tassie Tiger, and that was dueing a bush walk at cania gorge near monto, on the newel highway one the way to VIC, we saw what seemed like a black cat the size of a large dog, we thought it was a rotty but it moved like a cat and the way it jumped the fence on the side of the road. I have friends who drive trucks that just dont stop in someplaces at night for the things they have seen and heard. There are things that go bump in the night, always be careful.
Type in Australian Big Cat sightings in Youtube, some freaky crap on there. I have some personal experience with something along these lines, when I was a kid we had rellies on a sheep/grain property down near St George and I remember being shown sheep carcasses up in the forks of trees. But we never saw the culprit, we put it down to Wegde Tails. The funning thing is now I'm older and I hunt pigs in some of that country, those images and stories always cross my mind when I'm walking along. Good thing I carry a 'bang stick'
Sorry not a swag story but it should do.
I was a Police Officer in Collie in WA, about 20 yeras ago.
My offsider an I were called to a very frightened woman who's husband was away. Her dog which was very large was cowering under her house just shaking and all around the house were what looked like the biggest dog tracks I have ever seen. She did not see the animal properly, but said the it circled her house for quite some time and only left because we arrived.
We went back to the station got our 38's which are not much use anyway and drove to the next job, a very agitated farmer at Allanson about 2 K's west of Collie. Something very large was chasing his cows around the bush. We did not see the animal. We had a bit of a look around but none of us were really game enough to go into the bush and find out, and yes it was a full moon.
My dads best mate and his brother all use to go on trips out towards Janolen caves/bathurst area to go 4WDriving and fishing. One day my dads best mate and his brother were fishing on opposite sides of the river when dads best mate spotted a bloody lion behind his brother!! He said to his brother not to turn around and jump in the river and come across to his side. His brother said "wtf for??" etc etc... anyway he eventually did and turned around to see this big ass lion walking off into the bush. Both of them were sh!tting themselves so they went to the cop shop to tell them what they'd seen. The police weren't suprised at all as there was a circus in town and some of the animals had escaped!!
I think if i came across a lion in the bush i'd fair **** myself too haha!
Just thought of a swag one so this time I am on post.
A couple of years ago I went for a trip across the Kennedy Ranges with my brother and some of his mates. I was supplying him a car and someone to annoy as he is very focused person on his 3 favourtie things, his newspaper round, his wedding car hire business and his wifes horse agisting business for which he does 1/2 the work. I am fond of him but he is not normal and as usual he made us very late by not being packed up.
Anyway towards the north east end of the Ranges near the abandoned homestead we stopped at a group of tracks to get bearings and he tends to wander off alot and claimed to have found a large pug mark in the ground. I did not even look as it was a bit late and we were going to camp at the oldhomestead.
At the station site a few K's further on there is nothing much left of the house just the concret verandahs but surprisingly there is a fairly good 2 roomed shed neaby with a concrete floor. It was a spooky place too near the edge of the bluff wind howling etc. In the shed were the remains of at least 30 dead Kangaroos mostly just bones but some more recent arrivals straight away my brother began to babble about the pug mark only he saw.

The wise ones amongst us pretended nothing like that could happen in the bush but boy did we collect some firewood for that night and I spent a quiet 15 mins examining bones for teeth marks. I am sure the Kangaroos have a very good reason for going to the shed to die perhaps its just away from the wind but we were glad to move on next morning.
Heres a few stories that I dont tell too many people, because most people have too much of a 'closed mind' to even attempt to believe...but there seems to be some willing people on here, so here goes.
Dirranbandi, QLD...Used to head out there to do some pig shooting about 10 years ago, and two nights stick in my mind like they are tattoed into my brain. The first night we out in the ute and just after dark, we drove straight into an unsighted boghole. We decided to stay the night, and dig it out in the morning. The night was rather uneventful, or so we thought. We woke to find the biggest paw prints we have ever seen all around, and over the ute.
The prints were on the bonnet, windscreen, in the tray, on the windows (as if it had jumped up onto the door to look through the glass) and all around the ute in the mud. These prints were far too big to be a 'normal' dog, but they looked more like cat prints. I dont know how long this thing was eyeing us off, but I am glad we had the windows up, only leaving a small gap for air. We did follow the tracks the next morning, but we lost it after walking for an hour.
them cows n sheep in trees are aparently from floods, does the landscape agree?
Nope! Far from it! No rain in the area for years! Virtually flat except for low dunes and spinifex mounds all around, only a few scattered trees 'cos the only water course is a looong way off, like 20 km away, most of the few trees about 5-6m tall and the only tree big enough to hold a half a cow has a fresh haunch wedged a good 6 metres up in a fork!
Lots of disturbed sand around the base of that one tree, ripped bark and little branches torn off the trunk of the tree, in a similar pattern to what a cat leaves climbing, only waaayy bigger, and apart from that, the only other sign around is these dirty great pug marks about the size of a tea-cup & saucer, leading off towards the dry river bed, and clear enough that you can see where the animal has stopped and stood still for a bit, with a clear 1700-1800mm between front and rear paw prints!
Official answer - cross breed feral & wild dogs! Even with photo's of the whole lot, prints that clearly show the distance between the pads putting the thing at about 2m long and 1500mm high at the shoulder, and whatever it is, they climb trees and leave stashes of meat to tenderise out of reach of the little normal sized wild dogs! Sorry, they couldn't explain that! Somebody having a lend of us maybe?? Only about 600km from the nearest person, let alone practical jokers!!
We 4wd'ed into the back of Tantagara in northern Kozciousko at the edge of winter to fish (incidentally my teenaged snow driving causing dad to tan his daks and reclaim control of the family bus after a few too many "Jesus!" moments). There's only so far you can go along the shore as the shallows are really boggy and we set out on foot to scope out if we could make it all the way around and head across from somwhere north of the causeway to Old Currango homestead to Long Plain road (I think it was all depending on how far the water had backed up). There's a bunch of streams going every which way, none of which look crossable so dad goes one way and I go the other. By this stage it's getting really, really dark.
It's an early cold winter night and completely still with patches of snow here and there and I'm trying to walk far enough away from the waters edge to not get wet feet but not so far away that I get lost in the dark.
Then there is (quite close by) this gutteral inhuman screaming. Sort of like
the sounds possums make, only with a completely different voice. Sort of like if the possum was 10 feet tall and it's voice was several octaves lower. Like it was being gutted alive. It's off in the bush, over the next hill I think judging by the way the sound is carrying on the night air. Sometimes closer, sometimes further away. At the time, my thought was that it must have been a feral pig that lost a fight or something, and I'm mildly concerned, but not over much as it still sounds some distance away.
But it parallels me as I walk through the swampy crap at the edge of the lake. Again, not too far but getting closer. Manage to walk out onto a little spur and have to double back and figure out which way back to the car. Not too concerned, but I was bloody relieved when I rounded a ridge and saw the truck's lights off in the distance.
What if the trck had been a bit further off? What if the noise had been a bit closer. Bloody weird sound whatever it was, not like any animal sound I have ever heard before or since.

We have had that exact same thing happen to me and my mates, been 4wding all day west of moruya(duea national park) The 3 of us decided to go for a walk up this ridge line to look at the sun set. Half way back down its about 8:30pm we hear this screaming like somebody was being killed. We **** our selves but trying to not show it we keep walking along alittle faster. Dont hear this noise for about 1min. Then my mate just goes there's sombody following us off in the bush about 70 meters into the trees. We start to jog(we are all really fit) and what ever it was kept up easy! But as soon as we picked up the pace this blood crudling screamed happened again, we just sprinted back to the cars. Went home that night.
Went and told police in the moring and they said its about the 3 report that thay have got from that area.
Piliga stories are always a bit freaky who ever said something about 'the thing'. My bro used to drive through there alot and flat out refused to stop because of the Slim Dusty song.
yeah a lot of people say there is something in there.
my father grew up on a farm on the edge of the piliga scrub & was a roo shooter there for ages, he says he never saw anything strange . but has heard a lot of stories.
a know a couple of guys that broke downshooting in there one night.
they decided to walk out, & after a while they could hear something "large" parralelling them about 40m in off the road.
they put a couple of shots into the area & said that there was a lot of crashing & bashing sounds as this thing ran away.
10 min later it was back about 40m into the scrub following them again.
every time they put a shot near it, it ran away crashing thru the scrub.
they said it was the longest night of their lives & refuse to go into the piliga now at night.
i have camped in there before & heard nothing strange, but at other times when passing thru & pulling up for a "comfort stop", the bush would be very quiet with no nightime noises or insects making a sound.
the whole place is a maze of tracks & there are a lot of people doing "questionable" things coming & going all the time in there.
People being followed in the bush seems to come up alot, when I was a teenagder I was walking back from Childers to Hervey Bay after a fight with a friend, I started walking at 11:30pm-12:00am, approx 3am the road was derserted and pitch black(couldnt even see the white lines) so I keeped stumbling off the road into the gravel drainadge ditch on the side of the road. I keeped on getting the feeling that something was there keeping pace as I walked, I threw rocks in the direction that I thought it was in, the third rock hit a tree or something resulting in a load crashing through the scrub on the side of the road(I ****) I keeped on walking even though I couldnt see where I was going, maybe 20min later I noticed that feeling again so I stoped and then I heard it.... stealthy foot steps very close, so I throw a rock in blind panic, threw it very short thinking it was just going to hit the ground just a metre or two from where I stood, I heard a meaty thump, a hiss( like a breath) then that crashing through the bush again. I was glad for the lift a passing bus gave me not much later on, I can tell you..........
True story.......no bulls*#t
Hey Guys, Just thought I would put my 2 bobs in for whats its worth,
We were on a trip to Stockton with some of the guys from this forum and I had my mate, son and his mate with us. It was a real moonlight nite and could see the dunes a long way away, we were camped at the lagoon near Lavis and my sons mate said whats that? I looked over and saw 2 very large black figures about 300 metres away running up the slight dune towards the ocean side at the Lavis track that you follow to hit the water. Ive never seen dogs run like this as they sprint they don't lope along like a feline does, I swear they were running like a large cougar or panther would, they were running up the incline very fast and didnt look around, Ive heard stories of mascots from the american army got loose when they were there in ww2 but weve all heard them sort of stories im sure, but I tell you Ive never seen dogs this big or run like a big cat before and they were jet black, mabye some of the other guys that were on this trip will add there little bit but I kinda remember that we were the only 2 that saw them, im not sure wether we discussed it,Maybe Crunch will remember, I not saying they were panthers but hey there are plenty of locals that will say theve seem similar things up stockton
Another time was at Maxwell Flats camping with a couple of mates and my son, we set the tents up and kicked back to enjoy the fire and a few bevvies, it was late and very cold, the fog was rolling in (ye I know its sounds like a good script for a movie) the place was deserted and not a sound could be heard, its was like all the birds and insects and animals had pisssed of outa there, well anyway sitting quietly staring at the fire as you do when I heard this horrible scream whiny kinda noise and we all looked at each other with fear in our eyes (we are all experienced busshies but my mate was lookin very anxious) it could be heard about 200 300 metres in the scrub headin towards us, then we heard another one about 300 metres up along the bush line heading towards us also, they were definaty stalking or headin towards us calling out evey now and again to each other, well stainin the undies would be an understatement and we shone torches into the scrub but saw nothing, because we were moving around with the torches seemed to keep them from coming closer and we finally heard them calling each other heading into the distance, what were they who knows, Im not saying there were anything other than a couple of possums or randy koalas but my mate who has been campin and fourbying all over oz has never heard anything like it before and chilled hiss blood to the bone..
A couple of people have written about not hearing or seeing anything but still got the creeps, I get that up at the cells river area and I dont know what it is but I get the shivers up there and something doesn't feel right so i refuse to go there.
happy camping
