Parched lake to be fished out
The removal of freshwater native fish from Lake Menindee is expected to start soon, the Director of NSW Fisheries, Steve Dunn, said. NSW Fisheries has approved five permits for commercial fishers to remove native finfish from the lake, which is at a very low level and in danger of drying out. "Drought conditions in far western NSW prompted NSW Fisheries to call for expressions of interest for the commercial harvesting of fish in the Menindee lakes system, including golden perch and Murray cod," said Dunn. "Given these conditions, NSW Fisheries has listened to community concerns and has taken this action to make sure these valuable fish stocks are not wasted." "In normal circumstances, commercial harvesting of freshwater native finfish is prohibited in NSW as part of a program to boost the recovery of native species." "Permits for access to Lake Pamamaroo may also be granted if the Department of Land and Water Conservation advises conditions threaten the survival of fish." Mr Dunn said the Department of Land and Water Conservation is continuing to monitor the lakes, and if water levels improved, commercial fishing would stop.
