| Council to support Monkey Mia dolphin feeding |
The Conservation Council is supporting moves to introduce more dolphins into the hand-feeding program at Western Australia's Monkey Mia.
However the Shark Bay Shire believes more needs to be done.
The new dolphins to be introduced are the offspring of those already involved in the hand-feeding program.
For years they have followed their mothers to shore but have not been fed by humans.
Conservation Council spokeswoman Rachel Siewart says the introduction of the offspring is acceptable, but a long-term management strategy needs to be put in place.
"What we are seeking from Government is a bottom line and a commitment that they will not be actively recruiting dolphins to come in beyond those that are currently doing it and their progeny," she said.
Shark Bay Shire disagrees.
It is unhappy with the decision, saying dolphins which do not already visit the shore need to be introduced to ensure the animals keep coming to Monkey Mia.
