| Activists sail to protest nuclear material shipment off Aust coast |
A flotilla of boats from Australia and New Zealand will set sail today heading for a strip of international water off Australia's eastern coast to protest against a shipment of nuclear material.
The group of boats, calling itself the "Nuclear-Free Seas Flotilla" will keep a peaceful watch on a ship carrying radio-active material to make sure it does not enter Australian or New Zealand waters.
MoonTide skipper Ross Barnett says he is appalled the Federal Government has done nothing to stop the shipment coming so close to Australian waters.
"Other countries have kicked up such a fuss about this," Mr Barnett said.
"You know Fiji's come out against it, New Zealand's come out against it, the Caribbean countries won't let it go anywhere near their area that they can have a say in it and yet our Government seems to have been pretty quiet about it.
"So we're not so much taking matters into our own hands - we're saying we know it's coming, we want people to know and maybe something will be done," he said.
