| SA Govt bans commercial gill-net fishing on Murray |
South Australia will follow the precedent set by the eastern states today by effectively closing the commercial fishery in the River Murray.
The gill-nets used by the fishermen will be illegal from today
SA Fisheries Minister Paul Holloway has rejected a plea from the fishermen for a three-month reprieve on the gill-net ban.
Instead he has offered to halve the cost of a fishing licence in the hope that some fishermen may continue to catch introduced species such as European carp but he says the ban will be enforced from today.
"Clearly anyone who's using gill-nets will be reported," Mr Holloway said.
But lawyer Michael Coates says the Government is cruel and heartless and is cutting the fishermen off at the knees.
He is standing by the threat to take legal action.
"Ultimately that may be the only recourse; we just hope we don't have to get there," Mr Coates said.
"Mr Holloway says compensation offers will be made to the fishermen within a month," he said.
