Winter fishing in the metropolitan area

The best thing about all the people heading north for an angling adventure in winter is that it means there are less people fishing in Perth! Yep, you heard it first - during winter the fishing around the numerous metro inshore reefs absolutely goes off

Catching black bream on bait

Basic bait fishing is a great way to learn about fish environment and behaviour. Choosing a location with suitable structure, learning how to present baits, learning what rig is best to present those baits and how to fight the fish are all fundamental elements that all budding bream anglers should learn before they take the step to lures

Up the creek in the Exmouth Gulf

We walked up a tributary and came across a few mudcrabs. Surprisingly, there were no sandflies and the algal mats were looking rather healthy. So too was the land further in where it was lush and green from recent rains

Bunbury Fishing Report

Mmm…a fishing report for Bunbury for the past week? A bloke I know caught a Bream in the Collie River. The End. As you would expect, not a great deal to report on over the past week! We’ve copped some pretty wild weather of late, and it looks like we’re in for round two this week.

If this rough stuff doesn’t get the Pinkies fired up I don’t know what will. When conditions finally settle, it’ll be interesting to see how the fishing responds. I reckon we’ll find Pinkies and Dhuies in reasonable numbers any where from a couple of kilometers offshore out to 12 miles or so. There’s been some very solid Skippy well over 2kg in the bay of late too which have been very welcome, as let’s face it, there hasn’t been a lot of action out there in recent times.

The Mulloway are on the chew already, it’s just that Cyclone Bunbury has made fishing impossible. This next batch of rough weather won’t do any harm. The beaches will be weeded up big time so those that score a few fish from the beach will certainly be earning their fish. If possible, I’d be bait casting unweighted mulies into the surf. It’s hard work but they’ll be less prone to getting tangled up in all of the weed than using the traditional paternoster surf rig. Salmon will be an added bonus, there’s actually been a few around the place of late. The Cut is a viable option, and will probably be a lot easier to fish than the beaches around town.

Some of the more hardcore amongst us have been fishing the various rock walls around town. I haven’t heard any reports back yet, but it wouldn’t surprise me if a Snapper or two is landed off the stones in these conditions. Mulloway are a very real possibility too. You really can catch some amazing things that can only be caught in the most nasty of conditions during winter from the shore. You’ve got to be keen though!
